Ash Roberts on Designing for Daily Rhythm

Ash Roberts reflects on Ardo's "design that lives with you" philosophy, and how it shapes homes around the rhythms of everyday life, from natural materials to the quiet choreography of light.

At Ardo, design begins with a simple question: how do you actually live? Founder and director Ash Roberts believes a home should be shaped around the rhythms of daily life, not around the demands of a single dramatic photograph.

"Design that lives with you" is more than a studio motto - it is the lens through which every decision gets made, from the placement of a window to the selection of a stone benchtop. Roberts favours natural materials that age gracefully, rooms planned around real routines, and a considered approach to proportion and light that lets a space breathe.

"It's about creating homes people grow into," Roberts says. "The best moments in a project are rarely a big gesture - it's the way natural light moves across a surface, or a restrained transition between rooms, that changes how a space feels day to day."

For Ardo, that philosophy extends beyond any one project. Whether a renovation, a new build or a heritage transformation, the studio's focus stays on thoughtful planning and a restrained material palette - designing not for a moment, but for the years of everyday life that follow.
